On IWD 2021 we would like to acknowledge all the amazing women that work hard behind the scenes at Glenco, including our amazing partners, wives and mothers that support all our employees. Today we are also thrilled to introduce you to Candace Spence from our Building & Maintenance team. Candace is an apprentice carpenter and we asked her a few questions about her role in a male dominated industry. #IWD2021 #ChooseToChallenge #womeninconstruciton
What does International Women’s Day mean to you?
To me, International Women’s Day means that I get to represent women in an industry that is stereotypically male dominated, and be proud to show off that women can survive and thrive just as well.
Do you feel like you’re accepted by your peers?
Most of the time I do, sometimes the guys still like to have a joke, remind me that I am female and question my ability, which is cool because I know I can do exactly the same job as them, I just make sure I prove that I can be just as good, and I reckon sometimes even better!
Glenco make me feel like I’m one of the family. I am given the same opportunities as everyone else and I know I can surpass them if I do well. I always work hard and never slacken off so the boys can never say to me, “that’s because you’re a chic,” lol.
What progess have you seen for gender equality in the work place?
Women in the construction/trade industry are increasingly becoming more accepted and appreciated because leaders in these industries are starting to recognise the under-utilized pool of talent that women represent. I see more and more females working in trades, which is so awesome to see!
We are getting better at speaking up and more importantly, being heard. There are now more than ever, amazing opportunities in industries that we would never have been accepted into 30 or so years ago. It’s never been about special treatment for us, as we just want gender equality to be recognised.
What’s your IWD message?
Power to all women! We are strong, we are equal and there are no limits to what we, as women can accomplish….GO GIRLS !!
How did your career start with Glenco?
Through the Master Builders Association. I was fortunate enough to secure an apprenticeship and this is my second year.
